What’s the difference between Seasoned, Unseasoned, and Kiln-Dried Logs?

Unseasoned logs

When it comes to firewood, understanding moisture content is key to a hotter, more efficient and clean burn. Here’s the lowdown:

🌳 Unseasoned logs (green logs)

Freshly cut logs are high in moisture — often over 50%. This means they are hard to burn, produce more smoke, and deliver less heat.

🪵 Seasoned logs

Stored and dried naturally over time, seasoned logs typically have a moisture content of 25-50%. While they burn better than green logs, the drying process can vary, so moisture levels aren’t always consistent.

🔥 Kiln-dried logs

Dried in a controlled environment, such as a kiln, to achieve moisture levels below 20%. This means maximum heat, minimal smoke, and better efficiency. Kiln-dried logs also produce less smoke and soot, keeping your log burner and chimney cleaner.

⚖️ Did You Know?

UK laws require firewood sold in volumes under 2m³ to have a moisture content of 20% or less. By choosing our kiln-dried logs, you’re compliant with these regulations and supporting cleaner air.

❤ Our Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

At Cornish Firewood all our kiln dried logs have an average moisture content of less than 20%.
At Cornish Firewood we use heated drying rooms and a kiln heated using a biomass boiler, resulting in all our kiln dried logs having an average moisture content of less than 20%, and often even lower!
